I've been thinking. Life is better when you focus on the positive. It's obvious really, and very simply. Yet too often as humans we seem to focus on what is wrong with everything. Look at the newspaper. Any positive news is rarely on the front page, if in the paper at all. As a person I want to be defined by what I love, not by what I hate. I want to be defined what I am, not by what I am not. Think of the Pro-Family movement for example. To make their message palatable they need to appear to be "pro" something. "And if a day goes by without my doing something related to photography, it's as though I've neglected something essential to my existence, as though I had forgotten to wake up. I know that the accident of my being a photographer has made my life possible." Richard Avedon, 1970

I have recently uploaded the fourth and final installment in the 'Happyness' series. The photos in this series are all spontaneous portraits taken in and around the slums of Calcutta during my trip there in the Christmas holidays. My idea behind the this series (spelling taken from the film 'The Pursuit of Happyness' with Will Smith) came from thinking about what 'happiness' really is and how it is acquired. Dear Paul,

Greetings from India. I, Dr Aparna, am a doctor (Pediatrician) working in Delhi for the All India Institute of Medical Sciences. While searching for copyright free pictures of Indian children, for a National training module on pediatric Illness we found your picture "Happyness No. 03" which is stunning.

If you kindly allow us, we will like to use the picture as the cover slide of the presentation. It is a non-commercial, academic use and we will be mentioning your name in the credits.

The presentation itself will not be published but will be used to teach pediatricians all over the country about protocol based management of common childhood disorders.

This being a government, non-commercial venture we do not have any funds to provide any remuneration for your work, apart from our heart felt gratitude.

We tried to contact you but the website link provided above cant be reached. So I am writing this from the account of a friend of mine who has a DevianArt id.

Please contact me over e-mail at aparna.sinha.deb@gmail.com

Thanking you
